TRAVEL RESULT
For 1 month, I was assigned in UST Junior High School for observation and teaching practice, along with the information obtained and the practicum report that has been implemented.

1.      School : General Information and Academic Administration
a.    School Profile
UST Junior High School (UST-JHS) was officially founded in 1928 by Rev. Fr. Silvestre Sancho, O.P. Dean of the College of Education as a laboratory for students majoring in education.

UST Junior High School, follows the University's mission and vision that is part of it, namely in the next five years to realize UST as a Christian, Catholic, evangelistic, Filipino and education community, with a tradition of excellence involving its academic and non-academic staff, dedicated to overall student formation at the secondary level in competence, commitment and compassion.

UST Junior High School, proud of its tradition and aware of its role to share in the mission of the University of Santo Tomas, under the inspiration and protection of the St. Thomas Aquinas, affirmed and acknowledged his commitment to education at the secondary level, and to the formation of students in the Faith for the purpose of preparing them for higher education, which was formed as true Thomasians and became responsible citizens dedicated to serving God, the country and the whole world.

b.   Academic Supporting System
This school is under the auspices of the University of Santo Tomas. UST JHS is a fairly bona fide private school in Manila. The facilities and infrastructure are quite complete. Classrooms are facilitated with air conditioning, LCD Projectors, Sound Systems, Chalkboards, wall magazine boards, permission cards to leave the class, and so on.

The other facilities in UST JHS, there are library, science laboratory rooms, computer laboratories, auditorium, audio rooms, toilets, places of worship, and many more.

The school starts at 7:00 a.m. until 16:00 Philippine Time. Sometimes classes get additional hours, starting at 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Before starting learning, they always begin with praying together every 07.00.

c.    Teaching System
UST JHS has only one level of education, namely the junior secondary level, which starts from 7th grade to 10th grade. The classes that I make as practicum objects are 10th grade students, precisely in St. Damian.

Time per lesson hour for each day is adjusted for each segment. 1 hour of study lasts 25 minutes. For Physics subjects, one meeting lasts for 3 hours (3x25 minutes).

d.   Materials and Learning Resources
In physics classes, UST JHS uses many learning resources, such as printed books, electronic books, journals and articles, as well as other sources to support learning.

e.    Measurements and Evaluation System
The evaluation system they use is that the teacher usually gives excercize to students after explaining the topic then giving a quiz after the end of one or two parts of the chapter.

f.     Curriculum
UST Junior High School (UST JHS) uses K to 12 Curriculum, similar to other schools in the Philippines.

g.    Teaching Plan
Learning Plan that used in the JHS UST is the BBLP (BRAIN-BASED Learning Plan) format. For the format itself can be seen in the appendix

2.      Observation on Teacher
a.    Planning for Teaching
My mentor, as the physics teacher I observed, prepared a teaching plan for one chapter. Then prepare a daily plan prepared within 1-2 days before teaching, referring to the teaching plan per chapter that has been made.

b.   Preparing Lessons and Materials
Every day before going to class, my mentor prepares all the materials to be used, ranging from videos, tools for simulation, and also examines his teaching plans before teaching so that he can teach as best as possible.

c.    Teaching in Class
The teacher starts the class with a prayer and checks the attendance of students, gives greetings, then reviews the previous topic. The teacher is very disciplined with his students. In teaching, he always pays attention to students’s focus. If someone is out of focus, he always tries to restore the focus of the student by asking various concepts related to today’s lesson. Then, to make students understand the concept being taught, the teacher always asks students to read important concepts hard together. He is convinced that with this (repetition) students will be easier to understand the concept.

d.   Measurement and Evaluation
The teacher always gives exercises such as training activities, quiz bee, etc. after one topic is finished to be discussed. At the end of the topic, the teacher always provides training to test students' understanding. In addition there are also assessments of the results of group work, assignments, and projects.

3.      Teaching Practice
a.    Procedures of Teaching, Time Management and Organizing Activities
The first step, I must prepare lesson plans and materials that I will use in teaching exercises, my mentor also helps me in the process of making lesson plans. In the consultation process, my mentor always gives input when there are shortcomings or irregularities in the learning plan that I made.
Then my teaching procedure in class is:

b.    Problem Solving
If I find any difficulties when making lesson plans, I consult it with my mentor. When teaching, if students are noisy, I make my voice louder. If students are too passive, I direct them to do discussion activities, then occasionally I ask all students to read important concepts together with loud voice.

Summary and Suggestions

Time flies so fast πŸ˜”πŸ˜”
Now, I am really missing Philippines 😟
I miss walking on the right-side of the road.πŸ˜“
I miss the UST πŸ˜“
I miss eating Jollibee πŸ˜“
I miss my dorm 😑😑
I miss the SM Mall 😒😒
I miss everything in Manila
 πŸ˜πŸ˜πŸ˜πŸ˜πŸ˜πŸ˜πŸ˜πŸ˜

Yupp... It's okay...
Every begining has it's own ending, right :)
So, due to the end of this program, I want to evaluate it.

Purposes of practicum

On    My purpose On joining this program is, I want to improve my teaching skills, my English skills, and gain a lot of experiences. And, Alhamdulillah, All praise to Allah, I can gain all of my purpose itself. If I am comparing my purpose with the objectives of the SEA-Teacher Program itself,
  1. To enable pre-service student teachers to develop their teaching skills and pedagogy
  2. To encourage the pre-service student teachers to practice their English skills
  3. To allow the pre-service student teachers to gain a broader regional and world view
I can say that, SEA-Teacher program have achieve their objectives 😊😊

Procedures of practicum

The procedures on joining this program are,
At first I am registered myself in my Facculty, following several test, and after I am selected as delegates from UNILA, I have an Interview session with the receiving university (UST).
Yupp... After interview, I got my Letter of Acceptance!
Then I am arranging my flight, and prepare  anything.

I had a lot of activity during my stay in Manila.
Start from orientation, Observation, assistantship, independent teaching, and Grand teaching Demonstration. πŸ˜‰

Outcomes of practicum

The physical outcomes are,
1. Practicum Report for my Faculty
2. Blog

And the other outcomes are, I will use all what I got during my practicum here, for my next project for teaching, and etc.

The challenges of practicum

The most challenging here is, the language πŸ˜… altough English is second language in Manila, but not all of the students are understanding English. Sometimes, they are still learning using Filipino Language. So, If I want to delivering a 'hard' topic, It's challenging myself. Because sometimes they are not understand if I delivered it in English.

Overall impression

I am verry happy to be a part of SEA-Teacher batch 6 😍😍😍

Suggestions for future improvement

I just want to give some suggestions for my receiving university. I hope that the UST can improving the accomodation of transportation. Because, it is very difficult for us (SEA-Teacher participants that placed in UST) if we want to go somewhere.
But overall, everything is okay 😎😎

I will not talking too much today...
I just want to share some moments here.
Because I am so sad 😒😒

Good Bye, Philippines!
I'll see ya again next time!
